Cruise Ships in Lisbon
Lisbon is nowadays one of the main Cruise Ship destinations in Europe, the Portuguese Capital is visited during this time of the year almost on daily basis, and last week was no exception. Seen above on photos taken from the 23rd to the 30th of May, OCEAN MAJESTY one of the oldest cruise ships still afloat, built in 1966, the HANSEATIC, the brand new EUROPA 2 on her maiden voyage, AIDA VITA, COLUMBUS 2, OCEAN PRINCESS and FTI BERLIN.

FUNCHAL and PRINCESS DANAE in Lisbon
No trip to Lisbon is complete without a visit to see "FUNCHAL" and "PRINCESS DANAE", the ships are undergoing refits before resuming cruising service with their new owner/operator PORTUSCALE CRUISES, a newly formed Portuguese Company. This time the visit was rather special because local Maritime Historian and Photographer Luis Miguel Correia, a long time friend was available to join me. Before heading to see the laid-up ships we spent a few hours photographing the brand new EUROPA 2 on her maiden voyage, late in the evening we proceeded for the laid-up ships, there was inevitably a special focus on FUNCHAL, one of our favourites, a ship that has been part of our lives for 50 years, listening to Luis Miguel Correia talk about FUNCHAL is the same that listening to David Attenborough talk about our Planet, no other Historian or Enthusiast knows the vessel like him, LMC knows every rivet of the ship, it is quite absorbing to listen to his lectures, we really don't want the moment to end. It is quite a challenge to the new company to make it work, the ships are over 50 years old, the current economical situation does not help, we wish this new adventure a successful and profitable career, the task is huge, PORTUSCALE's fleet is completed by the former ARION and ATHENA which will be renamed respectively PORTO and AZORES, the PRINCESS DANAE will be known as LISBOA. "PORTO" is a classic passenger ship from the mid sixties, with only 5.900 G.T. she was completely rebuilt in 2000 when bought by her former owners C.I.C.. Photos were taken on the 29.5.2013, the day after she left the NAVALROCHA shipyard and is expected to resume cruising soon.

SOUTHAMPTON and its Cruise Ships
Southampton is one of the most famous Ports in the World, steeped in Maritime History this Southern England City and its Port has been linked with Liners and Cruise Ships for more than 100 years, all the best known Passenger ships in the World have been associated with the Port, today regular Liner voyages are a thing of the past, exception for CUNARD's QUEEN MARY 2 and her regular service to New York, after a couple of decades of recession on the sector, today the Port is once again very busy with regular calls by today's passenger ships in the form of Cruise Ships, huge ships bigger than ever mark almost a daily presence at Southampton, it's becoming a routine to have four/five cruise ships in a single day. Yesterday with the sun shinning I've decided to go down south and photograph the ships in Port, ROYAL PRINCESS the brand new PRINCESS CRUISES vessel, arrived for the very first time at Southampton last friday, 7.6.2013 and after a couple of shakedown cruises and naming ceremony on the 13.6.2013, she will start her maiden voyage on the 16.6.2013, she will head for the Mediterranean and Caribbean later in the year, other regulars were QM2, berthed at QUEEN ELIZABETH II terminal it's rightful place, MSC OPERA, CELEBRITY ECLIPSE and VENTURA completed the line up. In the next few days/weeks a selection of posts will be uploaded here to celebrate this SOUTHAMPTON FOR THE DAY EVENT. Photos 8.6.2013

M.V. "CELEBRITY ECLIPSE" at Southampton
"CELEBRITY ECLIPSE" is in my opinion one of the most beautiful cruise ships sailing today, she was introduced in 2010, built by the prestigious MEYER WERFT she has capacity for just over 2800 passengers and measures 122.000 G.T.. She was once again yesterday at Southampton and it was a real pleasure to photograph her at MAYFLOWER PARK at the City Cruise Terminal admiring her from the local Kiosk eating a bacon bap with some chips and changing some text messages with her number one fan, Andrew Cooke, was unforgettable, later registered her departure off Calshot, the last time I saw the ship was back in September last year off Livorno, you can check here. Brand new "ROYAL PRINCESS" at Southampton
"ROYAL PRINCESS" is the new flagship of PRINCESS CRUISES, she measures 141.000 G.T. and can accommodate 3600 passengers, the ship was built in Italy by FINCANTIERI. The new mega cruise-ship arrived at the Port of Southampton last Friday, 7.6.2013 she will depart on her Maiden Voyage this Sunday, the 16.6.2013, for this historic voyage her ports of call will be Vigo, Lisbon, Gibraltar, Malaga and Barcelona, before her first voyage the ship will be named this Thursday, 13.6.2013 by the Duchess of Cambridge. "ROYAL PRINCESS" will be operated by PRINCESS CRUISES first in the Mediterranean before heading for the Caribbean. "ROYAL PRINCESS" will have a sister ship, named REGAL PRINCESS at the present under construction, both ships were ordered by PRINCESS in May of 2010, photos included show the new ship at her berth at the OCEAN TERMINAL on the 8.6.2013. There is in my opinion a certain element of elegance about the ship, despite her so called, "Block of Flats" appearance, which I tend to agree in most cases, so common to modern cruise ships, I have seen a lot worse and firmly believe that she will grow on many people in years to come.

CUNARD, CARNIVAL UK and "CUNARD QUEENS" departing Southampton
CUNARD was formed in 1840, the connection with Southampton has been of major importance, some of the greatest Liners have sailed from there and CUNARD ships homeport has only recently been changed to Hamilton, despite the changing of flag, today's CUNARD owned by the CARNIVAL GROUP is still based and operated from Southampton, an American-British company known as CARNIVAL UK monitors operations from Southampton. QUEEN VICTORIA above and QUEEN ELIZABETH below are seen here departing Southampton, these two ships are the youngest of this proud Shipping Company, QV was built in 2007 and QE three years later, as a keen photographer and observer it gives me great pleasure to note that enthusiasts and general public still admire these ships, they are for modern standards, ships with a clear elegant profile and of course the CUNARD livery does help the overall image. There is a third ship, the CRYSTAL SERENITY built in 2003 with a G.T. of 68.870 tons also operated by CRYSTAL CRUISES. S.S. "EMPRESS OF BRITAIN" of 1931
"EMPRESS OF BRITAIN" built by JOHN BROWN at Clydebank in 1931 is considered to be one of the most remarkable Passenger Liners of the 20th century, she was a little over 42.000 G.T. with a beautiful profile with three massive funnels, she was capable of a service speed of 24 knots and was operated by CANADIAN PACIFIC on the Southampton to Quebec service. During her maiden voyage on the 27.5.1931 she achieved the impressive top speed of 25.72 knots, reaching Quebec from Cherbourg in just over five days, despite her speed her fuel consumption was very low and she was considered to be a very reliable ship, because of her speed she could sail from Southampton once a fortnight. During the winter months she used to do around the world voyages that would take about five months visiting 80 ports. In 1938 she brought back to the UK the Royal Family from Halifax, her last commercial trip was on the 2.9.1939, on her arrival at Quebec she was requisitioned by the Government to become a troopship. It was during her war career that she met her end, when en route from Cape Town to Liverpool, via Suez, she was attacked off the coast of Ireland and set ablaze by a German bomber on the 26.10.1940, two days later she was torpedoed by a U32 and sunk.
