It was nearly one year ago last time I saw the "SOVEREIGN" in Barcelona, she was still an all white ship with a red funnel, exactly one week ago, there she was once again but this time showing her new colours. At first I thought I would be disappointed, Blue doesn't always work out on cruise ships, more adventurous I heard from a comment on my FACEBOOK page, after all it is always a question of taste and to be honest, I was not disappointed with PULLMANTUR's livery on "SOVEREIGN", let me know your opinion by leaving your comment here, in order to see the ship all white and for further details on this classic, please click here. Cruise Ship "GRAND HOLIDAY" is seen here in detail, what I like to call "intimate shots" of a ship, one of my favourite photographic methods, explore and make the most of a ship, particularly passenger ships. "GRAND HOLIDAY" was at PALACRUCEROS, also known as Terminal D, one of the four incorporated on MOLL D' ADOSSAT a fantastic place for ship spotting and enjoy incomparable sea views in the city of Barcelona, all the Terminals are new, providing excellent facilities for passengers in transit or embarking/disembarking to or from their cruises, bars and restaurants, duty free shops, souvenir shops are part of the facilities available, the terminals are connected with the city centre by shuttle bus, there is also a taxi rank. Next "posts" will show other ships in port, the date, 13.7.2013

"DISNEY MAGIC" is one of my favourite cruise ships, last time I saw her was back in 2007 also in Barcelona, she has been once again been repositioned this July at the Catalan Capital for a series of cruises, the 1998 year built ship with 83.000 G.T., will be upgraded this year before heading to Miami, six weeks that's how long she will spend refurbishing her passenger facilities, bars, restaurants, cabins, spa and main lounges. She always looks in splendid condition not really showing her age, she is still what can be considered a new ship but compared to other cruise ships with the same age, she always looks immaculate, this joy of a ship is operated by DISNEY CRUISE LINE, her maiden voyage was on the 30.7.1998. "EUROPA 2" entered service last May, I was lucky enough to be in Lisbon at the end of her maiden voyage, less than two months later there she was at Barcelona, giving me the opportunity for some close-up photos, quite appropriately she was docked at the WORLD TRADE CENTRE Cruise Terminal, known as the, "Terminal S", she is a lovely ship indeed. cruise ships at Civitavecchia

Civitavecchia is the Port for Rome, I have been there in 1995 for the first time cruising on CAROUSEL, about two weeks ago I was back there on board Cruise Ferry "CRUISE ROMA", this has got to be one of the most difficult ports for ships enthusiasts to take their much loved photos of the ships calling this port. It was a challenge for me to take a few shots of "COSTA SERENA" and the new PRINCESS CRUISES flagship, "ROYAL PRINCESS", the port it's like a secluded fortress, not possible to get any advantage points to photograph our ships, I was persistent and asked permission to get inside the Ferry Terminal, which was allowed, on my way out after a few photos of a couple of cruise ferries I could get close to the cruise ships mentioned above and one gate, the customs gate which is generally closed was this time open, opportunity knocked and I made the most of it, for a very brief period of time though, an officer soon reminded me, in a very polite way, that the area was restricted to the public, so immediately obliged but with an happy soul, as a result the photos are here for us all to see, not the best, but the ones that were possible. Seen here departing Southampton is the Cruise Ship "MARINA", this modern version of the PACIFIC/ISLAND PRINCESS ships from the early seventies, has a distinctive yacht-like profile similar to the latter ships when they entered service more then forty years ago. "MARINA" was built in Italy by FINCANTIERI SESTRI PONENTE and delivered to their owners and operators OCEANIA CRUISES late 2010, her maiden voyage was on the 22.1.2011. Celebrating the Life of "THE LOVE BOAT"

"PACIFIC PRINCESS" was built in 1971 by German Shipyard NORDSEEWERKE as the SEA VENTURE for Norwegian Cruiseships A/S, Oslo. In 1975 the ship was sold to the recently acquired PRINCESS CRUISES part of the P & O Group and renamed "PACIFIC PRINCESS", she became a favourite of all ships enthusiasts because of her distinctive yacht-like profile, she was then a mid-sized cruise ship at little under 20.000 G.T.
In 1977 the World of Cruising would change forever when the TV Series known as the "THE LOVE BOAT" were set on board "PACIFIC PRINCESS", these ABC Television Series became a major TV success and the ship was known Worldwide, I was a regular follower of the program and remember at the time, people starting to talk about cruising due to the TV Series and of course "PACIFIC PRINCESS" became one of the most famous and well known passenger ships in the World, the sentence "I'd love to cruise" originated here. Other ships were used for the filming of the "LOVE BOAT" namely her twin sister "ISLAND PRINCESS" today still sailing as the "DISCOVERY", in the early 80's the "LOVE BOAT" series reached number 5 on TV rankings, the success was well exploited by PRINCESS CRUISES that used the term "love boat" for marketing. In 1998 the "PACIFIC PRINCESS" was bad press when heroin was found on board in Greece, the ship was linked with drug smugglers in the MED. The now commonly "LOVE BOAT" made her final voyage for PRINCESS CRUISES in 2002, since then she sailed for PULLMANTUR and QUAIL CRUISES, both operators shortened her name for just PACIFIC. In 2008 she was seized at Genova by Italian authorities for failing safety tests and reported financial problems, since then she has been laid-up at the Italian Port and regrettably she could not be saved, the ship sailing as the ACIF arrived last week at Aliaga in Turkey to be demolished. I have seen the ship many times, she was just a beautiful  sight, one, I will never forget, she changed the World of Cruising forever, her sister ship still sails for CMV as the "DISCOVERY" giving us all the opportunity to admire these elegant profile ships built all those years ago, the likes of wish we will always cherish. "FUNCHAL" has been a regular here, but this will most certainly be the most important "post" so far about this beautiful classic passenger ship, she was built back in 1961 and has been a very successful and lucky ship at the same time, back in September of 2010 "FUNCHAL" was laid-up in Lisbon facing uncertain future, in February of this year a newly formed Portuguese Cruise company, PORTUSCALE CRUISES bought the ship together with other three classic ships operated by former owners C.I.C., since then "FUNCHAL" has been going through a process of total renovation, surely one of the most important refits of her long life, the ship spent 72 days at NAVALROCHA Lisbon shipyard undergoing a complete renovation. "FUNCHAL" left dry dock a couple of days ago and will soon be going for her first sea trials, she is due to leave Lisbon on the 31.8.2013 and proceed directly to Gothenburg to start cruising again, a few cruises had to be cancelled because of delays at the shipyard, situation completely normal under the circumstances, please keep following the Blog, new entries and updates on the "FUNCHAL's" return to cruising coming here soon. Photos showing the ship leaving NAVALROCHA kindly sent by Noemi Nobrega and some of the brand new passenger facilities taken from Portuscale Cruises website.

Safety issues strand cruise ship - Göteborg Daily:

"FUNCHAL" one of the most talked about passenger ships at the moment, was due to start her maiden voyage on the 27.8.2013 cruising to the Norwegian Fjords, the ship after arrival at the Swedish Port of Goteborg failed the local safety inspection, several anomalies were founded, as a result the 1961 year built cruise ship had to cancel her first voyage. These sort of incidents are quite normal on any passenger ships despite the age of the ship, the Portuguese Operator decided to repair the ship at the Port and is working hard in order to guarantee the beginning of "FUNCHAL" cruising as soon as possible, the majority of the technical issues were rectified on the very same day of the inspection, there was one last issue which is now been looked after, this now unique passenger ship was totally rebuilt during the last few months, the next scheduled cruise for "FUNCHAL" is the SCOTISH LANDS, with departure tomorrow the 2sd of September, visiting Kirkwall, Invergordon, Aberdeen and Leith before returning to Goteborg on monday the 9th. This Blog will keep an watchful eye on developing matters related to the return of "FUNCHAL" to cruising, will she get underway tomorrow, we sincerely hope so.
