BLACK WATCH and FUNCHAL in Lisbon during the late nighties

After a few "posts" about the Superliners of the early 20th century, our Blog takes now to the year of 1997  when the above photos were taken. "FUNCHAL" and "BLACK WATCH" can be seen at Lisbon, the 1961 built "FUNCHAL" taken on passengers for another cruise and the FRED OLSEN ship during a call to the Portuguese Capital. "FUNCHAL" was already sailing for ARCALIA SHIPPING while "BLACK WATCH" had just joined FRED OLSEN CRUISE LINES, the ship was originally built in 1972 as the ROYAL VIKING STAR, she was purchased and has been operated since then by FRED OLSEN, so much as changed since 1997 but both ships are still with us, BLACK WATCH still going strong with FRED OLSEN and a much loved ship by her passengers while the "FUNCHAL" is expected to go back to cruising soon after being laid-up in Lisbon since September 2010.

Vistamar - Wikipedia:

The 1989 Built "VISTAMAR" is seen here at Santander during a cruise to the Cantabria Capital in Northern Spain, a beautiful Spanish County that lately has witnessed an increase in Passenger Ships visits and in Lisbon during the summer of 2004. The Photo in Spain was taken from on board BRITTANY FERRIES brand new "PONT-AVEN". For further details of the "VISTAMAR" please click the link above.

S.S. "MAXIM GORKIY" at Lisbon in 1989

The ship included in this "post" is another classic beauty and one of my favourites as well. Built in 1969 as the "HAMBURG" for German Atlantik Line, the first major passenger ship built in Germany since 1938, she was built by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche in Hamburg, her life with the German operator was short-lived, she was sold to Black Sea Shipping Co in 1974 and renamed "MAXIM GORKIY". She was about 25.000 GRT and had a top speed of 23 knots, the ship could carry just under 800 passengers. In 1988 she was chartered to the German Cruise operator Phoenix Reisen on a long term basis, she was in fact sailing for this company until the very end of her career in 2008 when she was withdrawn. Various attempts failed to save the ship from the scrapyard, including taken her back to Hamburg and be used as an Hotel ship. Unfortunately she was sold to scrap in February of 2009 and ended her days later that year at Alang. "MAXIM GORKIY" is seen here in Lisbon in 1989 already on charter with Phoenix Reisen her Russian colours were kept until 2005, so she's seen here still with the Black Sea Shipping Co. livery.

In this Historic Photo we can see the Lloyd Triestino "GUGLIELMO MARCONI" arriving at Hobart in Australia for the first time, I don't have the exact date but it would have been early December 1963, the ship departed Italy on her maiden voyage in November of that year and she took three weeks to get to Australia. For other posts and images of the Australian Lloyd Triestino twin sisters, the largest ever built passenger liners for this Shipping Company please visit my blog dedicated to the ships here. "ORIANA" A CLASSIC EIGHTEEN YEARS IN SERVICE

"ORIANA" completed yesterday eighteen years in service with P & O CRUISES. A lot has been written about "ORIANA", terms like "evolutionary not revolutionary" are far too common by now but were a first when "ORIANA" came into service, the truth is, she was in fact evolutionary a modern version of the ship that inspired her building, the fabulous "CANBERRA". I was on holiday in Palma de Mallorca during the summer of 1995 when "ORIANA" made her maiden call to the island, she was all over the news a few days before, "the new 5 star luxury British passenger ship will be visiting Palma this week", also remember that  a couple of months later when photographing her in Barcelona together with other ships enthusiasts met for the first time, the comment was "compared to the new ships we see these days, she is a classic". We tend to admire things that we dislike in the first place, we are educated likewise, ships book a place in history if they serve as a troopship in some war. "ORIANA" was by far one of my favourite ships of all time when she came into service, she reminded me straight away of her predecessor, the "CANBERRA", a lot more that QE2 resembled her famous predecessors QUEEN ELIZABETH and QUEEN MARY, a CUNARDER, the second biggest ship in the World at 65.000 GRT with just one funnel, there was a lot of discontentment, a lot more compared to when "ORIANA" entered service in 1995. Despite the addition of her "duck tail" "ORIANA's" profile has not been changed, she is today a classic that gained a place in passenger ships maritime history, cherished by passengers that would refuse to sail in a different ship, the same way that happened with the CANBERRA. P & O invested recently a lot of money upgrading her with a massive refit, that would keep her in service for many years to come, after eighteen years in service as a classic "ORIANA" is in my opinion one of the most exciting passenger ships at sea. The Cruise Ship "TERE MOANA" was built in 1998, the ship was sailing for COMPAGNIE DU PONANT as the LE LEVANT, last year she changed owners and is today cruising for PAUL GAUGIN CRUISES as the "TERE MOANA", the new owners spent a lot of money upgrading her to the usual luxury standards offered by PAUL GAUGIN, this 3.500 GRT ship has accommodation for only ninety passengers, she offers spacious staterooms, two restaurants and a luxurious spa among other facilities. "TERE MOANA" is operated with special emphasis on warm-weather destinations exploring ports that larger cruise ships cannot access, she cruises mainly in the Caribbean, Latin America and Europe. "TERE MOANA" is seen here during her maiden call at Funchal yesterday 10.4.2013, photos copyright by Peter Goncalves.

"BOUDICCA" opened the new cruise ship season in Liverpool today, the ship arrived at the Liverpool Cruise Terminal at 4.30 pm on a cold and wet day. "BOUDICCA" was built in 1973 by Wartsila in Finland as the ROYAL VIKING SKY, she was operated on around the world cruises by Royal Viking Line, when built she was just over 177 meters in length and 21.891 GT, in 1982 the ship was lengthened to 205 meters by A.G. Weser in Germany, her tonnage increased to 28.732 GT, she has capacity for 540 passengers and cruises at an average speed of 18 knots. Since 2005 the ship has been owned and operated by FRED OLSEN, today she is a classic passenger ship, considered to be a small ship she provides an intimate cruising experience that her passengers absolutely love it, I have spoken with some of her passengers that simply refuse to sail on different ships, particularly the new mega cruise-ships that can take up to 4000 passengers on board, FRED OLSEN has a reputation for delivering an excellent cruising experience. First three photos above were taken today from New Brighton under persistent rain, she is due back on several turnaround cruises in Liverpool this year, the other two photos shows the ship in the Algarve in July of 2011 and at Southampton on the 7.12.2007

"SAGA RUBY" captured yesterday at Funchal by the lenses of local Keen enthusiast Joao Abreu

"SAGA RUBY" returns to this Blog, I am pretty confident that all the regular followers and readers of this website don't really mind for yet another "post" about this beautiful ship, particularly after seeing these amazing photos. I was checking my e-mails just now and there it was, another message from Joao Abreu, Madeira's ship enthusiast and Photographer with these photos attached, with them there was a message saying.... to quote " it's a shame she will not be around much longer, which is sad because these generation of passengers liners is almost finished", to this sentence I've replied, it truly is, she is one of the most beautiful ships at sea, if not the most beautiful, but here in the UK, as a nation of an incomparable Maritime History we have a duty to preserve this ship, if going back to cruising is asking for too much after 2014, at least preserve her as an Hotel/Conference Centre/Museum, after all she was the very last great passenger liner to be built in the UK and it would be a unique tourist attraction for this Country, she has just the right size. 98 years ago today, 1198 people lost their lives when the CUNARD liner "LUSITANIA" sunk after been torpedoed by a German submarine. Still surrounded by controversy, all those innocent lives lost at sea should be remembered, this was one of the great sea disasters of all time and yet people tend to forget it, not this blog, so politics aside, there is a chance that we will never know the reality of the real facts, this post aims to remember all those who lost their lives, the majority of them so close to home, in fact she was so close to her final destination that many people ashore saw the sinking and witnessed many bodies been washed ashore, does 9/11 come to mind, surely in the manner some people watched others dying. Photos above, "LUSITANIA" arriving New York on her maiden voyage in 1907 and Memorial Remembering those who lost their lives travelling on the ship at Cobh in Ireland.

S.S. "ORONSAY" of 1951 a very popular ship both in Britain and Australia

"ORONSAY" was built by Vickers-Armstrongs, she was launched 30.6.1950 and completed in 1951, the ship left on her maiden voyage from London to Sydney on the 16.5.1951. "ORONSAY's" design was similar to ORCADES although slightly smaller, she had 27.632 G.T.. Four months after her launching a fire broke out which lasted for nearly three days, so much water was pumped on board that there were fears that she would capsize, fortunately damage was not as bad as expected but her completion was delayed for over two months. "ORONSAY" was built as a liner for her Australian voyages but also with cruising in mind, she made her first cruise from Tilbury in the summer of 1952. In 1954 her profile changed slightly due to the addition of a "top hat" to her funnel to improve smoke dispersal. In 1964 "ORONSAY" like other Orient passenger liners came under P & O, her hull changed from corn to white. In 1972 the ship was cruising full time all year round especially from Australia, she became a one-class ship, in 1975 P & O announced that she would be withdrawn from service, she left Southampton for the last time on 4.8.1975, she sailed via Panama to Sydney from where she made her final cruise to Hong-Kong, on the 28.9.1975 she disembarked her passengers and proceeded to Kaohsiung to be broken up. "ORONSAY" always enjoyed great popularity both in Britain and Australia.
