The M.S, "FUNCHAL" paid this last week an expected visit to the Merseyside. The ship was diverted to Liverpool due to the bad weather caused by the hurricane "Gonzalo" during the early part of the week, FUNCHAL departed Bristol/Avonmouth on the 6.10.2014 for a cruise to Norway and the Northern Lights, she was due back on the 21st, the extreme severe gales that affected the Bristol area resulted on the decision to divert the ship to Liverpool. FUNCHAL has been before, but was not expected until May of 2015, so it was really good to see her back and as always looking fabulous, the sending off at around 6.30pm is something I will never forget,a dramatic sunset, the likes of which we rarely see particularly at this time of the year, contributed for a spectacular departure. Barcelona and Civitavecchia are two of the busiest MED destinations for cruise ships throughout the year, even during the winter months there are ships on both Ports, either in transit or starting/finishing new voyages. I have been a regular to Barcelona for twenty years and for the past couple of years also Civitavecchia is amongst my most visited places in Europe, lately I have been using both Ports for my sea voyages using GRIMALDI Cruise Ferries. Seen here first at Barcelona is the HAL "MAASDAM", the following day when I got to the Rome seaport of Civitavecchia, the ROYAL CARIBBEAN "SPLENDOUR OF THE SEAS" and COSTA CRUISES, "COSTA PACIFICA" were both in Port, just about to get ready for departure. SNOWBOW PRODUCTIONS was created by Des Cox to ensure that British Maritime History with special emphasis on passengers liners of the golden age of travelling were preserved on film for future generations to cherish. Large range of DVD's, exclusive paintings and even Cruises are part of the extensive work provided by SNOWBOW. Last year really rare footage of TITANIC's sister ship, the 1911 built OLYMPIC was discovered and is now part of one of the World's largest Film Archives of Maritime History, please follow this link here for the interview given to ITV by Des Cox. I own some of the SNOWBOW DVD's and they are amongst the best I have seen, including a film of one of the cruises organized by Des on the now greatly missed DISCOVERY. You can check SNOWBOW website here.

Currently under construction in Italy at FINCANTIERI, "BRITANNIA" the new P & O CRUISES is expected so start her maiden voyage from Southampton on the 14th of march of 2015, the ship is 142.000 G.T., she was ordered in 2011, she has 15 passenger decks, the total occupancy will be for over 3500 guests, BRITANNIA is very similar in design to the PRINCESS CRUISES ships ROYAL PRINCESS entered service in 2013 and REGAL PRINCESS which debuted last year, the introduction of the new P & O CRUISES livery will give this ship a much more attractive and younger look to the ship compared to her PRINCESS sisters, very exciting news for the cruising industry and for P & O and the British Market.

Uncertain future for LISBOA

LISBOA built in 1955 as the PORT MELBOURNE is for sale, the ship is operated by the 2013 formed "Portuscale Cruises" after been acquired from C.I.C. in 2013, when she was sailing as the PRINCESS DANAE. Last March she was reportedly sold for scrap and meant to leave Lisbon for Turkey mid March, an ocean-going tug even arrived in Lisbon to tow LISBOA but the sale didn't materialize, will there be hope once again for this beautiful ship ? she's never sailed for her new owners after 2013, the ship was dry docked late 2013 and a lot of works were carried out but were interrupted, apparently the ship needed a lot more repairs than originally antecipated, she's been in Lisbon since late 2013 laid-up, will she sail again ? we hope so. Remembering the NORMANDIE of 1935

If I was asked to name the most beautiful Liner ever, the answer would have to be the NORMANDIE of 1935, never seen her live, but judging for the books, paintings, Maritime History information, the choice would have to go for the NORMANDIE, considering that she was built in 1935 her novel design was just amazing, even today she still looks modern, her interiors also were lavish and magnificent the best of ART DECO at sea, quite simply stunning, postcards above from my collection
