SHIPS & THE SEA - BLOGUE dos NAVIOS e do MAR: On board the AZORES:

The Portuguese Cruise Ship "AZORES", has departed from Lisbon last week on the 11th of March 2014, she left one day late due to last minute certificates got delayed been issued due to a minor computer failure, situation sorted with great efficiency by her owners and crew, very pleased to note lessons have been well learned following the "FUNCHAL" delays when the ship arrived at Goteborg in August last year, also due to start cruising after a major refit. The "AZORES" is possibly PORTUSCALE's best kept secret, she is both the eldest passenger ship in activity, but also the newest of her current owners, apart from her hull which dates back to 1948, when she came into service as the STOCKHOLM, the super structure and funnel are all dated from 1994 when the ship was rebuilt in Italy, she is now on charter with the German operator AMBIENTE KREUZFHARTEN, to see the ships interiors please click link above, all Luis Miguel Correia Copyright photos, above the ship in Lisbon, 9.3.2014

Cruise Ship "DISCOVERY" was introduced in 1972 as the ISLAND VENTURE, she became extremely famous when used for a few episodes of the famous TV series "THE LOVE BOAT", when the main protagonist, her sister ship PACIFIC PRINCESS was not available, "DISCOVERY" is still sailing today operated by British based C.M.V., unfortunately her sister was scrapped last year, she is seen here negotiating the lock on her way out to the river Hull and Humble Estuary before sailing the north sea, it is quite an experience to witness these big ships sailing through this lock which is only 25.9 meters wide, "DISCOVERY" is 24.64 meters wide, to be able to almost touch the ships is quite something for passengers on board and people walking the lock and surrounding footpath. "VINTAGE IS THE NEW MODERN", cruise review by Mike Louagie of his recent voyage on M.V. FUNCHAL

"FUNCHAL" is a classic Passenger ship originally built in 1961, last year after a period of three years laid-up in Lisbon the ship was purchased by the newly formed Company, Portuscale Cruises, she was restored to her former glory and prestige after spending months undergoing a massive refurbishment, one of the most important throughout her now long career. "FUNCHAL" was designed and conceived for the Portugal to Madeira and Azores service, a service she kept until 1972, she was then transformed into a full time cruise ship. She is now unique, a testimony of the 60's ship building, a living legend of an era where some of the most famous passenger ships of all time were built, QE2, CANBERRA, FRANCE and the Italian sisters, GALILEO GALILEI and GUGLIELMO MARCONI, to name but a few. As part of a promotional program that is underway, Mike Louagie, freelance photographer and prestigious writer of cruising reviews and works associated with cruise ships and ferries, recently travelled on "FUNCHAL" an historic trip that saw the ship resume the famous "End Of the Year" cruises to Madeira, here is his cruise review http://blackbluegreen.com/blue/vintage-is-the-new--modern. RMS "AQUITANIA" nicknamed "SHIP BEAUTIFUL" was one of the most beautiful ships of her day, she was built in 1914 and departed on her maiden voyage from Liverpool on the 30.5.1914. To mark the Centenary of her Historic sailing, "QUEEN VICTORIA", a new Cunarder, built in 2007 will visit the city of Liverpool next week end, the ship will arrive Friday the 30th of May and leave the Mersey the following day, it will be an event that hopefully will attract many people to the Liverpool Historic Waterfront. "AQUITANIA" from my collection and the new "QUEEN VICTORIA".

The affiliation between CUNARD and the city of Liverpool goes back to 1840 and is still very much alive today, despite Southampton being the UK home port for the CUNARD LINE.  "QUEEN VICTORIA" visited Liverpool last 30th and 31st of May to remember the maiden departure of another famous CUNARD passenger ship the "AQUITANIA", she left the Mersey for New York on the 31.5.1914. It never fails to impress me the amount of people that turns out to see the CUNARD ships every time they visit, this was quite an extraordinary event witnessed by thousands, a great warm up for next May 2015 when the three current passenger ships of the CUNARD LINE fleet visit once again the city of Liverpool on the same day to officially celebrate 175 years of the departure of the BRITANNIA to the New World. This and next posts will show as much as possible the visit of "QUEEN VICTORIA" to the Mersey, a sea of photos that will do the writing and talking, 30th and 31st May 2014

"QUEEN VICTORIA" left Liverpool early afternoon, about 3.45pm on the 31st of May, a gorgeous sunny and warm day, can't wait to see her back next year with her fleet mates QUEEN ELIZABETH and QUEEN MARY 2, she is a special ship to me, saw her arriving for the very first time at Southampton back in December of 2007, she is one of my favourite new ships. "QUEEN ELIZABETH" at Barcelona"

"QUEEN ELIZABETH" is the youngest passenger ship of the prestigious CUNARD LINE, the ship was ordered in 2007 at the Italian Shipyard FINCANTIERI, the same year that the QUEEN VICTORIA debuted, also built at the same yard. At 90.901 G.T., "QUEEN ELIZABETH" is the second largest passenger ship ever to be operated by the CUNARD LINE, she is exceeded only by Flagship, "QUEEN MARY 2". "QUEEN ELIZABETH" is very similar in design to the "QUEEN VICTORIA", the main exterior profile differences are, a steeper stern and also at the forward end of deck 11 there is a roof covering the games deck. Last Sunday we were both in Barcelona so I was really excited with the possibility of doing some photos of the ship. Her berth was Terminal C on the "Moll D' Adossat", where Terminals A, B, C and D are located, during the morning the light was very good so gave me a tremendous opportunity for some close-up photos, a very favourite hobby of mine, just love to soak up that intimate atmosphere so appealing to me. Later she was due to sail at 7.30 pm, the exact time if you are lucky enough to get the most of the evening light, which it was not the case, at the prospect of menacing clouds, I made the decision of taking an harbour cruise much earlier trying to avoid disappointment and I was glad I made that decision, so here she is looking immaculate after her recent refit, she is nearly four years old now, "QUEEN ELIZABETH" departed on her maiden voyage on the 12.10.2014, one day after being Christened by Her Majesty, QUEEN ELIZABETH. Cruise Ship "NIEUW AMSTERDAM" entered service in 2010, she is a VISTA CLASS ship, commonly known as a Signature Class Ship, which basically is a derivative design of the Vista Class ships, she has a very similar design of the CUNARD, "QUEEN ELIZABETH" which also entered service in 2010, both ships have a steeper stern and one more deck than the standard Vista Class ships, she is seen here at Barcelona last week, 16.6.2014.

I remember in the early 90's thinking that the EMPRESS, here pictured, was one very attractive passenger ship for modern standards, I still think the same, she's changed her livery from all white to the current one, but she remains a very elegant cruise ship, she should be a successful ship because of her size, at only 48.563 G.T. she is a small intimate ship, what a lot of passengers are looking for these days, the bigger the better is predominantly the motto but there has been an increase on the number of passengers looking for smaller vessels. EMPRESS was built by CHANTIERS DE L'ATLANTIQUE in 1990, since 2008 she has been operated by PULLMANTUR, she has capacity for 1850 guests.
